Kirkby Lonsdale
This attractive town is situated in the south eastern corner of Cumbria, in what used to be called Westmoreland. The Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales are both nearby, as are Lancashire and the coastline of Morecambe Bay.
The town has many attractions including Ruskin's view and Devils Bridge, an elegant structure which has stood for roughly 750 years. Kirkby Lonsdale is an ideal destination for walking, the surrounding area is full of natural beauty. The more adventurous might like to tackle nearby climbs such as Ingleborough.
In the town itself there are shops of character and charm with something to suit everyone. There are a number of historic buildings, one being St. Mary's Church - a Norman structure with fine carved columns. The view of the River Lune from its churchyard is known as Ruskin's View. It was praised ("as one of the loveliest in England") by John Ruskin and painted by J.M.W. Turner. The town has managed to remain unspoilt, despite it being a well known shopping area.
