In the town itself there are shops of character and charm with something to suit everyone. There are a number of historic buildings, one being St. Mary's Church - a Norman structure with fine carved columns. The view of the River Lune from its churchyard is known as Ruskin's View. It was praised ("as one of the loveliest in England") by John Ruskin and painted by J.M.W. Turner. The town has managed to remain unspoilt, despite it being a well known shopping area.
